[Fran] Does Canada have the cure for the hangover?
00:03
[Keller] We've created a facility to test the world's
00:05
greatest hangover cures, and we're testing 'em all.
00:09
I'm Dr. Keller Wortham, Doctor of Internal Medicine.
00:11
[Fran] I'm Fran Kranz, I'm not a doctor.
00:13
But I've been hungover a lot.
00:15
Welcome to the GQ Hangover Lab.
00:16
(sultry music)
00:18
Jeff Miller, hey.
00:19
Hi, how's it going?
00:20
[Fran] And what do you do?
00:21
I'm the editor of the Los Angeles edition of Thrillist.
00:24
Was last night a lot of fun?
00:25
It was, it was the next level of fancy drinkery.
00:28
Can we spy on you?
00:29
Can we just check out the night?
00:30
Yeah, let's pull up photos from last night.
00:31
(laughter) Oh, wow.
00:32
I went to a whiskey tasting to start the night.
00:35
It was 10 different rye whiskeys.
00:36
Whiskey is up on the top of the list
00:38
of alcohols that will make you feel shitty the next day.
00:41
Really?
00:42
So some of the whiskeys last night were like 140 proof.
00:45
Normal whiskey's about 80 proof,
00:47
so you're talking, you know--
00:48
Really intense.
00:49
Now we're a bar.
00:49
I met up with a friend.
00:52
But it was like glasses of whiskey and shots of Jameson.
00:55
Oh wow, man, you did it.
00:57
How do you feel?
00:58
I have a headache.
00:59
I feel like there's no more water in my system whatsoever.
01:02
Well we did some vital signs,
01:04
we checked your blood pressure,
01:05
we checked your blood sugar,
01:06
and then we tried a game to test your
01:08
motor skills, your depth perception, and that went--
01:12
[Jeff] Pretty poorly, yeah.
01:13
Yeah, zero for 10, yes.
01:15
I hope you're gonna like this cure.
01:17
I hope it's something that hits home.
01:18
I hope so too.
01:20
I mean, he went strong last night.
01:22
17 to 20 whiskeys?
01:24
Yeah, he's got the classic hangover symptoms.
01:27
Dehydration, headache, stomach grumbling,
01:29
and just feeling very fatigued.
01:31
Poutine is the ultimate French Canadian comfort food.
01:34
French fries, cheese curds, and gravy.
01:37
That's what he's getting.
01:38
He's getting a hot, steaming plate of it.
01:40
(laughter)
01:42
When you have a lot of alcohol,
01:44
it destroys your body's ability to do some other
01:47
metabolic functions, and that leads to this hormonal surge,
01:52
and this specific hormone called galanin
01:54
that makes you crave really fatty, greasy foods.
01:57
They're gonna release a whole bunch of dopamine,
01:59
and they're gonna give you
02:00
what your body is craving at that moment.
02:01
Uh, I just wanna tell you guys, I can see what's here.
02:04
This is one of the most exciting moments of my life.
02:06
You guys talk amongst yourselves.
02:07
I'm going for it.
02:08
(laughter)
02:10
This is what I need.
02:11
[Fran] Amazing.
02:12
(upbeat techno music)
02:16
I think that hugs are in order, really.
02:18
I think that's where we're at.
02:19
(upbeat techno music)
02:21
I'm so much happier than I was five minutes ago.
02:24
No, that's the poutine glow.
02:26
Should we go back, do some vitals and see how we do?
02:28
[Jeff] All right.
02:29
(upbeat techno music)
02:32
125 over 80.
02:33
So the big salty meal dropped your blood pressure.
02:36
(laughter)
02:37
So blood sugar, 116.
02:38
Your body might be liking that higher glucose level.
02:42
Sure.
02:43
And now we just gotta do the motor skills test.
02:45
Let's do it.
02:46
Sweet.
02:48
Round two.
02:49
I'm excited, let's do it.
02:50
What do you think?
02:51
I'm feeling much better.
02:52
So the deal is, you know,
02:53
this game of horseshoes is testing your motor skills,
02:55
your depth perception, your focus.
02:57
You had the poutine cure,
02:59
we're gonna see if your score gets better.
03:01
You certainly feel better, we'll see if it translates
03:03
to a better game.
03:03
I think it's gonna happen, let's do it.
03:05
(upbeat techno music)
03:09
(horseshoes clanging)
03:15
That's it!
03:16
(men cheering)
03:18
Yeah, success!
03:18
(bell dings)
03:19
(laughter) Here, come on in.
03:20
All right.
03:21
Come back, wow.
03:22
There's actually something that happens
03:23
in your body when you're metabolizing alcohol
03:26
that ruins the way other things are broken down in the body.
03:30
So your liver has to deal with the alcohol, it's a toxin.
03:34
So it can't make sugar the way it's supposed to.
03:36
It can't process fats the way it's supposed to.
03:39
And this all leads to, like, a whole bunch of
03:41
imbalance in certain hormone levels,
03:43
and one of them, this hormone called galanin,
03:46
is increased, and it makes you crave fatty foods like crazy.
03:51
You also need sugar because your blood sugars
03:54
have kind of gone down, like yours had.
03:56
And so you want something that's gonna be
03:58
really calorically dense, which fats have
04:01
the most calories per gram of any other foods.
04:03
That doesn't necessarily mean that it
04:05
cures a hangover in the sense of that it's, like,
04:08
fixing the problems that you have.
04:11
But that rush of greasy, fatty foods
04:14
tells your bran, That is what I needed.
04:16
I feel 100 times better.
04:18
I think that the poutine actually cured the hangover.
04:22
I think the water helped cure the hangover.
04:24
I think getting a little physical activity,
04:26
even if it's just with the arm helped with the hangover.
04:29
And now, who wants to go drink some whiskey tonight?
04:32
I would love to.
04:33
I have not seen us have that much success,
04:37
at least in the way someone's feeling
04:39
since we started this thing.
04:40
Yeah.
04:40
It invigorated him from the very first bite.
04:43
He was glowing, we redid his vitals.
04:45
Miraculously, the salty, fatty poutine
04:48
brought his blood pressure down.
04:50
I think it has to be
04:51
number one of the un-healthy cures, right?
04:53
I'm gonna give it the A- because it's not healthy.
04:56
Poutine worked for his hangover at this particular moment.
04:59
If I'm just evaluating is this a good hangover cure,
05:02
then I, yeah, I have to give it a B+.
05:06
All right.
05:07
I'm Dr. Keller Wortham.
05:08
I'm Fran Kranz.
