I love Dark and Stormys.
00:05
I mean, who doesn't?
00:05
It's a great summer drink,
00:07
but I've always wanted
00:07
to enjoy something like it all year round,
00:09
so I thought it would be cool to do
00:10
a variation on it for the fall,
00:12
incorporating some of those trademark autumnal flavors.
00:15
Today, I'm gonna show it to you.
00:16
It's called The Tempest.
00:18
For this cocktail, you're gonna need some apple brandy,
00:20
some fresh lime juice and some fresh ginger,
00:22
cinnamon syrup, and some hard apple cider,
00:25
or hard pumpkin cider.
00:26
We're gonna build this drink in a mixing glass,
00:27
shake it up, and strain it over a highball glass later.
00:30
To start, we're going to muddle some fresh ginger in
00:32
with our cinnamon syrup.
00:34
Cinnamon syrup is the ultimate fall cocktail ingredient.
00:37
You do have to make it yourself,
00:38
but it's a cinch and really worth the effort.
00:41
All you have to do is
00:43
crush up about six cinnamon sticks,
00:45
add about two cups of simple syrup,
00:48
bring the whole thing to a boil,
00:50
then take it right off heat,
00:52
and then let it sit
00:52
for about six to 12 hours,
00:54
then strain out the cinnamon.
00:55
It works with whiskey.
00:56
It works with gin.
00:57
It works with champagne.
00:59
(glass clattering)
01:00
Got tons of uses.
01:01
You won't regret it.
01:02
Okay, got our ginger and cinnamon in there.
01:03
Now we're gonna juice some limes,
01:06
just half an ounce of fresh lime juice,
01:10
and then one ounce of apple brandy.
01:12
Apple brandy is distilled apples.
01:14
There are a lot of versions out there.
01:16
You might have heard of Calvados,
01:17
which is also an apple brandy from Calvados, France.
01:20
It's a little bit rounder.
01:21
I prefer the more American versions
01:23
that are sharper, more whiskey-like.
01:26
Alright, now we're gonna shake this
01:27
and strain it into a highball glass.
01:28
(ice clattering)

01:37
And I like to use a fine strainer
01:38
to get those little bits of ginger,
01:41
nice, even texture,
01:43
and now instead of ginger beer
01:44
like a traditional Dark and Stormy,
01:46
we're gonna top it with hard apple cider,
01:48
or if you're lucky,
01:49
in the fall, a lot of producers release a pumpkin cider,
01:52
which is amazing in this drink.
01:53
Both are great though.
01:55
Top it off,
01:56
and finally, we're gonna garnish with a lime wheel,
01:59
and a cinnamon stick,
02:03
and that is The Tempest.
02:04
This is a great drink for Halloween parties.
02:07
Your costume will not be complete without one.
