Today I'd like to introduce you to a drink
00:06
called the Smash of the Titans.
00:08
This drink is a variation on the style of cocktail
00:09
called the Smash, which essentially is a mint julep
00:12
with muddled lemon wedges,
00:13
but in this drink, we're going to use
00:15
kumquats for the lemons and oregano in place of mint.
00:17
In addition to the kumquats and oregano,
00:19
you're going to need some bourbon,
00:20
a little bit of simple syrup
00:21
and a little bit of lemon juice.
00:22
First you have to juice a little bit of lemon juice.
00:25
I cannot stress how important fresh citrus juice is
00:28
for every cocktail.
00:29
It doesn't take that much work,
00:31
and the difference in quality is beyond compare.
00:33
I'm just going to juice this
00:33
with my handy hand juicer here right into the jigger,
00:37
just a quarter on an ounce,
00:40
throw it into the mixing glass.
00:42
Now we're going to add our kumquats, four kumquats,
00:45
and some simple syrup, 3/4 of an ounce.
00:49
Now we're going to muddle this together.
00:51
You want to hit each one at least once,
00:54
and break them up and express all that juice in there.
01:01
The really cool thing about kumquats is that
01:03
they are actually surprisingly sour
01:04
which makes them a good substitute for lemon,
01:06
but the peels, the pith, is very, very sweet,
01:09
which will come in handy later.
01:11
So now we can add our bourbon, two ounces.
01:17
Next we're going to add some pinch of oregano,
01:20
which we don't have to muddle.
01:23
Fill the glass with ice,
01:25
give it a good shake for about 10 seconds or so.
01:30
Excuse me.
01:36
OK.
01:37
Most drinks with muddled ingredients
01:38
you're usually going to strain that stuff out,
01:40
so that it doesn't get into the glass,
01:42
but with this drink, because the peels are so sweet,
01:44
we're just gonna dump the whole thing in,
01:46
and you'll have a nice little treat to fish out.
01:47
You wouldn't think you can eat the rinds,
01:49
but it actually is really delicious,
01:52
and also because it looks really, really awesome.
01:55
Finally, we're going to garnish this
01:56
with a couple of sprigs of oregano
01:58
which gives it a nice aromatic note as you drink it.
02:01
And we called this drink the Smash of the Titans
02:02
because we thought it made it look like
02:03
a Grecian laurel, and also because we just thought
02:07
the Smash of the Titans was a really cool name.
02:09
Cheers.
