Today I'm gonna show you one of Mexico's
00:05
most popular cocktails.
00:06
And no, it's not the Margarita.
00:08
It is the lesser known, and peerlessly refreshing, Paloma.
00:11
For this cocktail you're gonna need
00:13
some Blanco Tequila,
00:14
a couple lime wedges,
00:15
a pinch of salt,
00:16
and some grapefruit soda.
00:17
We're gonna start by building this right in the glass,
00:19
kind of the way you would a gin and tonic or a rum and Coke.
00:21
So we're gonna start with two ounces of Blanco Tequila.
00:23
There are three major kinds of tequila:
00:25
Blanco, Reposado, and Anejo.
00:27
Blanco means white, and it's barely been aged at all.
00:30
The Reposado means rested,
00:31
means it's been aged up to a year,
00:32
has a slightly yellower color.
00:34
And then Anejo means aged,
00:36
and has spent one to three years in a barrel.
00:38
It's more complex and has more of an amber color.
00:41
But for mixing really refreshing cocktails
00:42
like this or a Margarita,
00:44
Blanco is the best way to go.
00:45
All right, so we're gonna fill this glass with ice.
00:48
Throw in a pinch of salt, right over the top.
00:51
You'll see some recipes that call for a salt rim,
00:53
I just like to throw it right in.
00:54
And now a lime wedge,
00:56
which we're gonna squeeze over the ice,
00:58
and just toss it in.
00:59
Now we're ready for our grapefruit soda.
01:01
There are not that many grapefruit soda brands
01:03
around in the US market.
01:05
There's some really good Mexican brands out there,
01:06
if you can find those.
01:07
But if you can't find any,
01:09
you can also substitute some grapefruit juice,
01:11
agave, and soda water.
01:12
So just an ounce of grapefruit juice,
01:13
half an ounce of agave nectar,
01:15
and top it with soda, stir it up.
01:17
Finally, finish it off with a lime wedge.
01:20
And that is the Paloma,
01:22
your summer alternative to the Margarita.
