[Host] I'm Matt D'Andria and this is Car Collectors.
00:12
I'm Beau Boeckmann.
00:13
I'm the vice president of Galpin Motors,
00:15
and president of Galpin Auto Sports.
00:17
We have about 50 cars or so here,
00:19
and you'll notice their from many different genres
00:21
and many different styles.
00:23
I guess if there's any one theme that runs through it
00:25
is that we love customs.
00:27
Hey Matt.
00:28
Beau, good seeing you buddy.
00:29
Good to see you too.
00:30
Thank you for inviting me over
00:31
to the Galpin Auto Sport collection.
00:33
You have so many great cars here.
00:35
Let's talk about some of your hot rods.
00:37
Tell me about Ed Roth.
00:38
I grew up with custom cars, so to me,
00:39
kind of the wilder, the better.
00:41
And I look at where car customizing came from.
00:44
Who inspired a culture?
00:46
And it all comes down to Bid Daddy Roth.
00:49
I mean what he did was really transform cars into art.
00:53
[Matt] Beau, of all the Ed Roth cars,
00:54
which one is your favorite?
00:55
Hands down, Orbitron.
00:57
[Matt] I know this one has a great story.
00:58
Great story. Come on.
01:00
Ed Roth built Orbitron in 1964,
01:04
and he wanted to have an asymmetrical design
01:07
with some new technology in it.
01:09
The new technology was color television, in the day.
01:12
So the idea was to have a red, green, and blue light,
01:15
but as they shown together, it would be one white light.
01:18
And of course with the bubble top, the monkey fur,
01:21
the television, this was a real show car.
01:24
Now oddly, this was one of his failures that he considered.
01:27
And he blamed it squarely on the Beatles.
01:30
'Cause he said kids stopped caring about cars,
01:32
and they just picked up guitars.
01:34
Let's take a look at some of the other Roth cars.
01:35
Alright.
01:36
And this is Rotar,
01:38
or the Roth Air Car.
01:40
It's a hovercraft, and it actually flew back in the day.
01:43
In 1962, he flew this at car shows.
01:45
It doesn't work right now.
01:47
I wish.
01:48
It's pretty dangerous.
01:49
Extremely.
01:50
It must've been a blast at the time.
01:51
Just the idea of being able to try to create a hovercraft.
01:54
And there was this whole wave when they thought
01:56
hovercrafts would be the next car of the future.
01:58
So much for that idea.
02:00
And this is Mysterion.
02:02
Now this is a clone because the real Mysterion
02:05
was actually destroyed, but this was Roth's wildest car.
02:09
It's very alien-like.
02:11
It was the first like, real asymmetrical car.
02:14
It just makes no sense.
02:15
No one had ever done anything like this before.
02:18
Twin engine, bubble top blue with monkey fur interior.
02:24
It's completely insane.
02:26
That's the idea.
02:27
I love it.
02:28
Tell me about these two cars.
02:29
You got these two together here.
02:30
Well this is the Ice Truck and the Milk Truck.
02:33
They were built by Dan Woods actually,
02:35
who was kind of a protege,
02:36
and who eventually went to go work for Big Daddy Roth
02:39
building a lot of his cars.
02:40
Now I know you're working on another car
02:42
that you don't have here now.
02:43
It's a '34 Ford.
02:44
Yes.
02:45
But a lot of that has this influence into it, right?
02:47
Yeah, the one we don't have here is our '34 Ford,
02:51
which is just unbelievable.
02:53
It's one of the wildest paint jobs that you'll ever see.
02:56
All the glass is actually blue plexi.
03:00
Even in the engine compartment, transmission,
03:02
you can see through it.
03:03
It's got a massive thunderbolt engine in it.
03:06
It just sounds like the world's coming to an end
03:08
when you start it up.
03:09
And it's literally perfect.
03:12
Beau, thank you so much.
03:13
An absolute pleasure.
03:14
You have such a great car collection.
03:15
